Who’s who in the Daily Mail
I am still mesmerised by the Daily Mail’s RSS news feed (which I won’t link to, because I don’t want to give them the pleasure) - it’s the Daily Mail, but boiled down to it’s purest form. A bit like the end of Time Bandits (“That’s concentrated evil. One drop of that could turn you all into hermit crabs”).
Today I am transfixed with wonder at they treat people’s names in headlines. Some people are known by their first name (hooray!)…
- Gary - “high profile celebrit[y]“
- Abigail - “stabbed mother”
- Jacko - “star”
- Tom
- Camilla - “the picture of elegance”
- Eamonn - “TV presenter”
- Kiera - “baby”
- Rio - “Manchester United and England defender”
…but some get the surname treatment (boo! hiss!)…
- Blair - “party leader”
- Howard - “party leader”
- Gerrard - “Liverpool midfielder”
- Els - “The world number three”
- Glazer - “American business tycoon”
- Goldsmith - “Attorney General”
- Pitt
It’s not even divided by profession; Rio Ferdinand and Ernie Els get different treatment, as do Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Are “Rio” and “Tom” really so much ones of us?
Must get some fresh air…
