Sometimes you can have too many awards

But not yet. Tonight a group of us trouped off to the Newspaper Awards 2005, and - would you believe it - we won another award. This, straight after our Webby award last week.

In case you’re wondering, as I was, this not the one with the annual Piers Morgan/Jeremy Clarkson welterweight boxing championship. It’s the one where the backroom boys and girls emerge from the shadows to receive their 15 milliseconds of fame, before returning for another 12 months of hard work while their more famous colleagues get to appear on Celebrity Newsnight Makeover. This is hardcore newspaper stuff, and you don’t get much more hardcore than the Coldset Colour Supplement of the Year Award, sponsored by Sun Chemical Usher-Walker.

So clearly, these are the only awards that count.

Guardian Unlimited won Best Daily Newspaper on the World Wide Web (I thank you) for an unnerving sixth year in a row - a thrill that was only enhanced by the awards being presented by Joanna Lumley, who treated us to an enchanting story about sewing lapel badges in Afghanistan.

Actually, all this may sound very cynical, but in fact we all sat around afterwards congratulating one another and drunkenly telling each other that all those editorial differences and infuriating meetings we complain about are actually the very things that made us great, and that departmental tensions are really crucial to our success and how I love my employer, I really do, they’re the best employer in the whole world, would you like another glass of wine…?
