Internet Explorer 6: An apology

In recent months we may have inadvertently given the impression that Internet Explorer 6 was a reasonably acceptable browser, and that any problems that users might have had reading this blog were entirely limited to their own PC.

Headlines such as “Four eggs in a box”, “A morning without Today” and “How Royal Mail did it” may have led readers to believe that issues such as supermarket packaging, Radio 4 and elastic bands were matters of public importance. They may have thought it was entirely their own problem when they saw paragraphs on this blog disappear as they scrolled down, ugly black text in the masthead, or blog content mysteriously slide off to the left as they read further down the page.

Having finally upgraded to Internet Explorer 6 ourselves, we now recognise that it has far more bugs than anyone could reasonably expect, and in particular that its implementation of Cascading Style Sheets made this blog virtually unreadable.

We apologise that your browsing experience has been so abominably impaired. We apologise for ignoring your plight while we discussed domestic trivia. We are sorry for the hours we have had to spend indoors on a sunny Saturday afternoon, fiddling around fixing the problems, when we could have spent the time indoors coding Java. And most of all we apologise that IE6 is such a piece of cack.

We hope the fixes we have put in place restore this blog to the high standards of presentation you should expect. Thank you.
