On BAE Systems’ £1m bung to Pinochet
While listening to the Today programme this morning I was perturbed to hear this at the start of the regular Digby Jones’s Thought for the Day slot — sorry, I mean the business news:
Presenter: With me to analyse the news today I have Bob Blah from Barings Asset Management. Now, I notice the Guardian is reporting that BAE Systems secretly paid General Pinochet £1m to win arms contracts. Bob, how is this going to affect BAe’s share price?
Bob Blah: Not at all, the share price won’t be affected by this at all.
Presenter: Turning to Morrisons, now…
Well, I’m glad we’ve picked out the important points from that piece of news. More people killed or tortured more easily as a result of Pinochet receiving that money? Sorry, mate, don’t think there’s a cell in my spreadsheet for that…
