The last cry of Ernst Barlach

Following my run in with the estate of Ernst Barlach, the tale has moved on a little since the first installment. Having removed the offending picture from the site and written to tell them so (with an apology), I was hoping they might see their way to closing the matter altogether. Not quite. They did, however, (and almost by return of post) offer to drop their charge to a “minimum” of €30 which they said is to cover basic admin costs.

I’m going to pay it. Someone really has spent some time tracking me down from a website to my home address, and written a couple of letters which have clearly come from a real person considering this particular situation. The time they spent on that is probably worth €30. Weighed up additionally against my chances of winning some kind of minor legal skirmish I’d say it’s a good time to quit.

Meanwhile transfering money to a German bank account is substantially more difficult than if the account was held in the UK. But that’s another matter.

Hi Emily, I’ve sent you a mail directly. In this more general/public space I can say this affair certainly did give me pause to think about how and what newspaper photographers are able to publish — and in particular those who illustrate exhibition reviews. I thought I knew roughly how newspaper photographers worked, but realise now I’m quite clueless.
