David Lloyd speaks

Last night I went to see a talk by David Lloyd, the artist behind the V for Vendetta comic (now a major motion picture). An exhibition of his work has just started at the Newsroom in Farringdon Road.

He talked about how he came to draw the story and something of the art itself. Having never heard a comic artist talk about their work there was much that was new to me. But some things stand out particularly. For one thing, he was firmly of the belief that thought bubbles should be avoided at all costs on the very reasonable grounds that they are unrealistic — the story should be able to be told from what you see and hear. For another, when the story first began in Warrior the owner couldn’t afford to pay his contributors much, so part of the deal was that they got retain copyright of all their work. That seemed amazing to me.

David has seen the film, of course, and says good things about it. So maybe it won’t be so awful after all.

I bought the monthly installments when the colourised version was serialised. They’re probably now in the parents’ loft. I doubt I’d have thrown them away.

I only ask because I’ve bought you the novel. Wanted to make sure that’s all. Looks good. Although I was subjected to a bit of wierd geeky conversation with the sales bloke. Frightened the life out of me. Couldn’t do the comic thing full time.

That’s very nice, thanks. And I’ve certainly given up the comic thing full time. Last night one weirdo turned up in a suit.
