Part 462 in an endless series. You know the Prime Minister is losing it when he spends time going over detailed figures in his monthly press conference. It’s not a big deal — indeed, the debate really should be over hard facts rather than more nebulous things — but in reality it’s a shift away from his usual stance. Usually a prime minister (and certainly this prime minister) is more concerned with the higher level stuff and leaves the details to his or her ministers. The PM would be talking about strategy and vision and objectives and purpose. The ministers would be dealing with the minutiae of figures and tables that have come from their hoards of civil servants. But now the Prime Minister himself is falling back into the false security of a blanket of numbers. It’s as if he can no longer handle the war and is seeking to win the battle.
And as for Charles Clarke attacking newspapers for not appreciating his policies, just don’t get me started…
