The BBC’s open programme catalogue

Here it is (thanks, Dave). Enter a phrase, have a play. I stumbled on Raymond Baxter’s tag cloud, which is very nice (although they call it a “subject categories cloud”, which is fair, if a little unusual).

Can you imagine the vast cataloguing effort involved? There’s a glimpse of it here.

This is a real public service, albeit a rather anoraky one. It’s the good side of Creative Future — BSkyB and co couldn’t argue against this. But they might argue about the other online areas that the BBC is moving into, moving from a public service broadcaster to a company that’s chasing an audience which has found other media.
