Ethnocentrism

People who work in different areas think in different patterns, observe different things, and attach relevance and importance to what they see in different ways. But we all work across many different areas in our every day life, and constantly switch from one kind of thing to another.

I am interested both in technology and what’s going on in media. Here is what I’ve just discovered from reading two articles, one straight after another:

(1) David Blunkett, now writing for the Sun, is to sue its sister papers The Times and The Sunday Times. He really is a bit of a bruiser, and very much New Labour’s Norman Tebbit. After describing the situation the article from Press Gazette ends like this:

Former Home Secretary Blunkett also seeks an injunction banning the repetition of the allegations at the centre of his claim. The writ was issued by Tamsin Allen of Bindman and Partners.

Next up in my browser…

(2) An article in OnJava.com tells us “What’s New in Eclipse 3.2 Java Development Tools”. But it starts with a quote from Babylon 5.

I found the switch startling, from one category which assumes readers want to know which solicitor is acting in a media writ, to another which regards television sci-fi as quotable literature. But sadly (and inevitably) I am more comfortable with the latter. Anthropologists call this “ethnocentrism”.
