Thank goodness for Lord Goldsmith
I have an absolutely terrible memory. So I’m greatful to Lord Goldsmith for reminding me how disillusioned I’ve become with the Blair government, and how corrupt and squalid it is. The SFO enquiry into BAE/Saudi government corruption was one saga I was enjoying watching pan out. I was particularly amused by the recent story that the Saudis threatened to pull out of one contract unless the UK government stopped the SFO enquiry. Ho ho, I thought, the Saudis need to learn a lesson in “how government works in a democracy”. The UK government can’t stop a police investigation, that only happens in places like Russia and, well, Saudi Arabia. But I had reckoned without the insidious force that is New Labour in power. Of course they can stop it, they’re New Labour. They did have an ethical foreign policy, but sadly Robin Cook is no longer with us. In more ways than one.
