On Friday we joined old friends and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the School of Computing at the University of Leeds. Specially brewed for the occasion was a rather dark beer, whose credentials were printed in hexadecimal.
On Saturday we visited Knaresborough, and in a tea shop there overheard an elderly lady recalling her troubles using her daughter’s calculator (perhaps proving that 50 years is still too short for some people’s assimilation of technology). “It took me as long to find where each button was. I don’t know why they can’t put them in order, like on a typewriter. I mean 9 was up here, 3 was down there…”
