dpreview.com sold…
…to Amazon, according to The Register. The site (for digital photography reviews) has always been fantastically rich in content. Lots of coverage, and lots of great detail. And it was always a treat to see the sample photography with landmarks you recognised, as it’s UK-based.
I’d have hoped dpreview.com’s founder, Phil Askey, would now be taking well-deserved retirement following all the hard work he’s put in since 1998, but apparently not:
“One of the difficulties of operating dpreview.com independently has been the balance between producing content and delivering new site features,” said Phil Askey, founder of dpreview.com. “Now, with the support of Amazon, I’ll be able to devote more of my time to expanding and improving our features - such as product reviews and discussion forums while still delivering the high-quality content that our readers have come to expect.”
Which I translate as “I used to produce content and deliver features, and now I’m delivering features and producing content,” but he’s no longer his own boss. I guess the hard work really starts now, but at least there are no more money worries. Congratulations to him.
