Dorian Ford at The Space

Dorian Ford flyerLast night we went to see our friend Dorian Ford play at The Space in Westferry. A wonderful evening, Dorian plays jazz piano and last night was the second in a series of three events at the same venue, each with him in a different trio and with a different agenda.

Last last night he was playing with Max de Wardener and Iian Pattinson on bass and drums respectively, covering the music of Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Web and others. Actually, you’d have to know the originals reasonably well to recognise them, because they took the core tunes and wove something new and wonderful around each of them. Since my knowledge of music only covers a period of about three weeks in 1991 I failed to recognise every single piece apart from one of the encores (”You were always on my mind”, by Elvis, and covered by The Pet Shop Boys). Though that didn’t prevent me from being mistaken for a jazz aficionado; probably that special slouch and vacant stare I’ve managed to cultivate over the years.

Anyway, the third of the three events is on Thursday 5 July 2007 at 8pm at the same venue, nearest tube Mudchute, and it’ll be be-bop. If you’re going, we’ll see you there.
