Roadside trees

In order to make sure a city really is a city they make it difficult to plant trees. So if someone wants to put a tree beside the road, in order to, say, make the place look nice, then they first have to dig a hole in the pavement and then plant the tree. But for some reason they can’t fill the remaining space with soil — instead they have to use something much tougher, which can only be dug up with a pneumatic drill, presumably to ensure the tree doesn’t escape and go back to its friends in the countryside.

Anyway, here are two photos of the ground beside roadside trees.
