What I want in a gadget, part 4,298

Simon’s had a new iPhone for few days, and articulates something that I’ve suspected for a while:

without doubt it is the App Store that elevates this from a cool phone to a product in a category all of its own.

But then goes on to say:

If anything, it now feels like the direct descendent of the palm 10 years ago.

Oh! If only! Truly, I want an excuse to buy an iPhone or an iPod Touch, but it’s still not where I want it to be. The apps probably turn it into a decent GTD-tool, though it still needs contacts and diary search. But also, having spent a lovely weekend away and wanting to Twitter about it, I’ve yet again revised my thinking about an ideal gadget.

I don’t want a new mobile phone contract. I have one already, it costs me £12/month and O2 can’t improve on that, but it doesn’t include data. So what I really want an iPod touch with one of those £10/month USB broadband addons. That can’t be so difficult, can it? Or better still, an iPhone with only data coverage (as that gives me a camera and microphone) which again should cost less than an iPhone with phone+data coverage, though I suspect the high cost of the phone itself needs to be hidden somewhere in the cost.

Isn’t this a gap that should have been filled already?
